‘Sherlock’ Season 4 Confirmed: Why It’s the Best Show on TV

sherlock season 4

It's official! One of the best shows on television (sorry Game of Thrones, I still love you) has been renewed for season 4! Sherlock season 4 has been ordered, and if you aren't watching this show, you really should be. And not just to gawk at Benedict Cumberbatch and his cheekbones. Well, partly because of that.

The show is clever, hilarious, and so well done. The chemistry between Benedict, who plays Sherlock, and Martin Freeman, who plays Dr. Watson, is simply amazing. Producers announced the news on Wednesday, confirming that our favorite pair will return with a special episode and a three-episode fourth season.

Three episodes, you say?! Why yes, but the episodes are an hour and a half long with no commercials. Plus, considering the insanely busy schedules Cumberbatch and Freeman have, fans will take what they can get.

“Series Four!” wrote co-creator and actor Mark Gatiss, who plays Sherlock's brother, Mycroft. “At last! It’s always special to return to Sherlock but this time it’s even more special as we’re doing ... a Special! Not only THAT, we’ll then be shooting three more episodes which will take Sherlock and John Watson into deeper and darker water than ever before ... The whole Sherlock team are terrifically excited to return for four new adventures. The Game is on -- again!”

Fans were teased on Twitter with the hashtag #221back by the BBC. Check out some of the Tweets:

Think we'll get a chance to see Jim Moriarty again in season 4, Sherlock's biggest nemesis from the show? (Considering these Tweets, we most likely will.) If you recall (SPOILER ALERT), Moriarty shot himself in the biggest season 2 cliffhanger of all time, when Sherlock seemingly killed himself by jumping off a building ... but miraculously staged the entire thing.

The Internet went crazy. Twitter went crazy. YouTube went crazy. And I may have spent a few hours checking fans' versions of how Sherlock pulled off the greatest stunt ever. Yes, I am a loser.

Anyway, to get you excited, here is one of my favorite scenes from the series, when Sherlock and Watson get plastered together:

My god wasn't that whistle by Freeman the absolute best?

Hopefully they'll be able to get everything together to put out a Christmas special. We've been without Sherlock and his witty insults for far too long. Filming should start in 2015, but that means we may not see season 4 until 2016. Still, considering this is one of the best shows on television (have I said that enough yet?), fans will wait as long as necessary to get their fill. Yes, the game is afoot on!

Do you watch Sherlock? Are you excited that season 4 is official?
