Paul Simon & Edie Brickell Arrested for Most Unexpected Celebrity Fight Ever

If you told me a celebrity couple had been arrested and charged with disorderly conduct over the weekend, the people that would instantly come to mind would be Paul Simon and his wife Edie Brickell. These rabblerousing musicians have long been known for their outrageous behavior, violent tendencies, and constant brushes with the law, and I for one am not even remotely shocked that they --

Okay, I can't even keep this up. Paul Simon and Edie Brickell's weekend drama is officially the most random celebrity arrest I've heard of, and I'm including the time Matthew McConaughey was busted for being high, dancing nude, and playing the bongos. (Although admittedly that one was a little less unexpected.)

So apparently Simon and Brickell, who have been married since 1992, were hit with charges on Saturday after police responded to a "family dispute" at their New Canaan home. A caller from the singers' home dialed 911 and hung up, and officers who responded found minor injuries and believed it was a case of domestic violence.

According to police, both Simon and Brickell were given a misdemeanor summons, and Simon agreed to leave and go to another location. Police said "there was aggressiveness on both sides," and that they were both victims.

The couple appeared in court today, holding hands, and explained the situation as a rare fight that had spiraled into a minor physical altercation. As their attorney said outside the courthouse,

On a scale of 1 to 10, it was a 1.

It sounds like Simon and Brickell have made amends, at least for the judge's benefit, but what an awkward situation to go public. I'm sure most of us have had some fights at one time or another that were never meant to extend beyond private walls -- although picking up the phone to call 911 is a pretty sure indicator that things had gotten way out of hand. Who could have ever guessed these two peaceful hippie types would be arrested for something like this? Maybe they can start working on recording a new song together: "50 Healthy Ways to Successfully Resolve Conflict With Your Lover."

What song does this story make you think of? I'm going with "Still Crazy After All These Years."
