Nirvana Shocks Fans With Secret Show After Hall of Fame Induction (VIDEO)

nirvana st vincentLast night, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame hosted the 29th annual Induction Ceremony at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. Performers included Hall and Oats, KISS, Cat Stevens, and Nirvana. Fans had been wondering who was going to front what I believe to be one of the greatest bands ever -- no one could do what Kurt Cobain did. It had to be different enough but honor him in the right way. And then we learned it was going to be Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, Lorde, and St. Vincent singing different songs during the performance. Fans were nervous. It had to be great. It was going to be emotional. This was quite an eclectic mix fronting one of the best bands ever. Would it work? It did.

But Nirvana didn't stop there. After the Barclays show ended, they headed over to Greenpoint, Brooklyn, to play a secret after-show at one of the neighborhood's most beloved but gritty venues -- the tiny Saint Vitus bar on Manhattan Avenue. Incredible.

I live very close to this venue and had I known this secret show was taking place, I would have been there in minutes. But I didn't. Thankfully my friend Tommy Rockstar was there so we can all live vicariously.

From Tommy's Facebook page:

Just as I was about to go to bed after a killer night at the RnR HoF Induction Ceremony with Marta, I heard about a secret, post-ceremony Nirvana show happening at St. Vitus that was already underway. Naturally, I cruised the fu*k over there and used every rockstar superpower bestowed upon me by the rock gods to try to get in to the show and low & behold...  In space the size of my apartment, I caught part of one of the most amazing, 16-song live sets I have ever seen which, at one point or another, included guest vocals by the likes of Joan Jett, Kim Gordon, J Mascis, and mutherfu*kin' John McCauley of Deer Tick, who at one point in the set had to stop & teach the band how to play their own songs.  This picture is of St. Vincent singing 'Heart Shaped Box', which is the only picture I took before my phone died.  Needless to say, if you need me today I'll be on Cloud 9, please leave a message.

Then he shared this video:

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I could feel the amazing happening in that room. And St. Vincent (aka Annie Clark and former member of The Polyphonic Spree and Sufjan Stevens touring band), who I had never heard of until now, was perfect. I couldn't help but see her wild, chin-length blonde hair and see Kurt. Tommy shared that all the singers who sang with Nirvana were great, but St. Vincent was his favorite.

Tommy's podcast "Live From the Barrage" airs tonight at 8 p.m. where he'll no doubt talk about his experience.

Want more? Here's Joan Jett doing Smells Like Teen Spirit.

The actual Hall of Fame concert will air on HBO on Saturday, May 31 at 9 p.m.

What did you think of St. Vincent's and Joan Jett's performance with Nirvana?
