Matthew McConaughey Explains 'Alright Alright Alright' & It's Amazing (VIDEO)

Matthew McConaugheyI don't care what else happens in 2014, this is The Year of Matthew McConaughey. Bup-bup-bup-bup, don't even come at me with suggestions for other actors who might be jostling him for position as Hollywood top dawg, it's McConaughey AlltheWay.

Even if we didn't have his mind-bending performance in True Detective, even if he wasn't starring in the hotly-anticipated Christopher Nolan sci-fi flick Interstellar, even if he wasn't serving as the hilarious writing inspiration for Magic Mike 2, we'd still have his epically awesome, ever-so-slightly-weird, completely memorable Oscar acceptance speech. "Alright, alright, alright," am I right?

If you've ever been curious what McConaughey's deal is with that particular catchphrase, there's a great video of him explaining it. I'm not sure what's more entertaining: the story itself or McConaughey's delivery -- but either way, it makes me want to give him a BIG HUG (mug).

I can't find a decent clip of McConaughey's Best Actor acceptance speech that wasn't blurrily recorded on someone's living room TV, but here's how he concluded it:

And to my hero, that's who I chase. When I was 15 years old I had a very important person in my life ask me who was my hero, and I said 'I don't know. I gotta think about that, give me a few weeks.' And I come back two weeks later, and they said, 'Who's your hero?' and I said, 'You know, I thought about it. It's me in 10 years. So I turn 25 ten years later, and that same person asked me 'Are you your hero?' and I was like, 'Not even close.' And she said 'Why not?' and I said, 'My hero is me at 35.' So every day, every week, every month, every year of my life, my hero is always 10 years away. I'm never going to attain that, I know I'm not. That keeps me the somebody to keep on chasing.
So to any of us, whatever those things are, whatever we look forward to, and whoever it is we're chasin', to that I say Amen. To that I say, all right, all right, all right. To that I say just keep livin'.

Alright alright alright were the first words he ever said onscreen in Dazed and Confused back in 1993, and it's sort of become his signature line ever since.

It's even on a collection from JKL clothing, which donates a portion of its proceeds to the Just Keep Living' Foundation, a nonprofit organization McConaughey founded.

During an interview with George Stroumboulopoulos in 2011, Matthew McConaughey explained how he came up with that phrase for his Wooderson character in Dazed and Confused. It all started with a Doors song, you see ...

Man, I just love him. I bet we'll hear that line during every awards speech he gives, and I'm guessing there will be plenty more to come. (2014 Emmys: Matthew McConaughey for the win. I'm calling it. Alright alright alright? Alright.)

Are you rabidly in favor of the McConaissance like me?
