Oscar-Winning Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman Found Dead in His Apartment

philip seymour hoffmanI was just watching him in the movie Late Quartet a few weeks ago; I am tremendously saddened that such a dazzling performer is gone. Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead at home in Greenwich Village today. A friend found him in his apartment at 11:30 a.m. Police believe he died of a drug overdose and are investigating right now. The 46-year-old was the father of three children.

Hoffman struggled with drug addiction in his 20s, was sober for 23 years, and began using drugs again in 2012. Last May he checked himself into rehab because he feared he was on the verge of returning to his heroin addiction. An unnamed police source says he was found with a syringe in his arm and 2 packets of heroin nearby. Hoffman's substance abuse issues no doubt come as a surprise to many of his fans. He dealt with his demons quietly.

A concerned friend went to Hoffman's apartment when he failed to pick up his children at 9:00 a.m. this morning as planned.

Hoffman won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for the title role in Capote -- among many other awards and nominations. His death is a huge loss to film and theater, but nothing compared to the loss suffered by his longtime partner, Mimi O'Donnell, and children.

Did you know Hoffman was dealing with heroin addiction?
