Kate Middleton's Beloved 'Guest' Banned From Royal Christmas for His Own Good

That guest would be Lupo, the loveable cocker spaniel who has been a constant companion of the Duke and Duchess for over a year.

According to a courtier, “The Queen made it clear that Lupo was not on the guest list. The Duchess is especially fond of the puppy and was sad that he could not accompany them. He had to sit it out at her parents’ home in Berkshire." What a bummer for Kate ... Still, it's not like the Queen didn't have her (very understandable) reasons.

Dr. Roger Mugford, referred to as a "dog whisperer" whose counsel the Queen has sought in the past to help her with her notoriously unruly corgis, tells the Telegraph that the Queen really had no choice:

Cocker spaniels are sociable by nature and good at getting along with other dogs, but the same isn’t always true of the Queen’s corgis. The commotion of Christmas -- the large number of people, the unfamiliar faces, and all the distractions -- can make them unpredictable. Another dog coming into their territory, with all of that going on, isn’t necessarily going to be welcomed by them.

Makes sense ... What's more, the corgis have a track record of being particularly naughty around visiting dogs. Last summer at Balmoral, they "ganged up" on and attacked Max, Princess Beatrice's Norfolk terrier. Poor Max had extensive flesh wounds and nearly lost an ear, and as you can imagine, the Queen was "very upset" about what happened. So it is no wonder she felt the need to take extra precautions to protect Lupo from a similar fate over the holiday!

That said, although I can understand why the Duchess would've been distraught about Lupo's absence from Sandringham, sounds like it was probably in everyone's best interest that he spent Christmas with Carole and Michael Middleton instead! And a friend claims that at least Lupo will be in on the royal couple's New Year's plans, as they're "seeing in 2014 with Catherine's family."

What do you think about the Queen's decision to keep Lupo away from her corgis? Have you ever had to keep your dog away from a family gathering for its own best interest?
