Katy Perry Reveals Why Her Marriage to Russell Brand Really Fell Apart

Katy PerryKaty Perry has been happily dating John Mayer for awhile now and rumor has it they will probably get married soon. But given how short her first marriage to Russell Brand was, no doubt she might be a little wary. Katy has finally opened up about what caused the quick demise of their marriage, and I think it's something a lot of couples can relate to. Katy told Marie Claire:

[Brand] really wanted me to have children, and I knew I wasn't ready.

Wow, Russell jumped on the kid wagon pretty quickly, didn't he? Consdering they were only married for 14 months -- and probably not getting along for much of that.

The "Roar" singer and Robert Pattinson friend (with benefits?) told the mag about her desire to hold off on babies:

If I have a kid, then I would have to sacrifice. I'd have to be home more. I really wanted to, but I knew I wasn't ready for it. It wasn't like, "Hey, let's have a kid because we're in love."

Katy did a smart thing. It doesn't sound like the marriage had a strong foundation to begin with, no matter how much in love they were, and a baby probably would have just ripped it apart sooner. And then there would be a child to deal with.

Too often people make the mistake of having kids, thinking it will bring them closer together. But 2 a.m. feedings, finances, and the stress of a child can do the opposite. If the marriage is strong, it could definitely bring you closer. If not, no amount of kids will fix it.

Still, just because Katy didn't want kids doesn't mean that Russell should have broken up with her by text message on New Year's Eve. That right there says a lot about how much he would have been there for her during pregnancy and child rearing.

Russell has a great sense of humor and he seems like a good person -- he befriends homeless people -- but that doesn't mean the couple would have been good parents together.

Good thing they got this one over with early. At 29, Katy still has lots of time to pop a few kids out. Probably with John Mayer! We shall see.

Do you think Katy made the right decision? Should you have a kid if your spouse is ready but you aren't?
