Beyonce & Jay-Z Celebrate His Birthday by Giving Up Meat (& Lots of Other Goodies)

jay-z beyonceOther than the odd rumor that she does the extreme Master Cleanse or that she ate a seriously calorie-restricted, protein-packed diet to shed her baby weight after Blue Ivy, Beyonce has never really been all that vocal about her diet. But now her husband, Jay-Z, is sharing all the details about a plan they're doing together. The power couple is going vegan! Well, at least temporarily.

Jay broke the news on his blog yesterday, explaining that the timing for them to try the switch to a plant-based diet couldn't have been more perfect. After all, he celebrates his 44th birthday today!

The rapper explained:

Psychologists have said it takes 21 days to make or break a habit. On the 22nd day, you've found the way. On December 3, one day before my 44th birthday, I will embark on a 22 Days challenge to go completely vegan, or as I prefer to call it, plant-based! This all began a few months back when a good friend and vegan challenged me to embrace a 'plant-based breakfast' every day. It was surprisingly easier on me than I thought.

He went on to share how this will be "a spiritual and physical cleanse," which he'll document all along the way. Though he doesn't know if this is going to be a long-term commitment, writing:

I don't know what happens after Christmas. A semi-vegan, a full plant-based diet? Or just a spiritual and physical challenge? We'll see. ... B is also joining me.

Very cool. While I definitely admire that they want to try their hand (palates?) at a vegan cleanse/diet, I do think it bears noting that veganism is truly a lifestyle. Not a "habit," like going to the gym more or flossing. It's serious and even if you're Bey and Jay and have access to all the finest-quality food, most upscale restaurants, and even a personal chef, I still feel like it requires a lot of dedication. Your heart really has to be in it.

That said, everyone should give it a try! There's no question it's ridiculously healthy (as long as you're not eating lots of gross, processed meat substitutes ...). But if it doesn't stick after 2, 22, or even 200 days, no biggie. We're not all cut out to be meatless anyway!

What do you make of Jay and Bey's cleanse? Have you ever tried to go vegan?
