Jennifer Lawrence's Social Anxiety Revelation Makes Her More Relatable Than Ever

jennifer lawrenceThere is no doubt that Jennifer Lawrence has been taking the world by storm lately, especially because Hunger Games: Catching Fire will be premiering in theaters come November 22. So it makes sense that she's making the media rounds, proving to be more likable than ever before (if that's possible). As an Oscar winner, a young woman who's the star of a huge franchise, and a fallible human being who actually makes tripping up stage endearing, it's really difficult not to love her even more after she opened up about acting helping her overcome her social anxiety.

In an interview with French magazine Madame Figaro, the 23-year-old said, "My nickname was 'Nitro,' as in nitroglycerin ... I was hyperactive, curious about everything. When my mother told me about my childhood, she always told me there was like a light in me, a spark that inspired me constantly. When I entered school, the light went out. We never knew what it was, a kind of social anxiety. But I had friends."

It got so bad that she tried therapy. "I went to see a shrink," she explains. "Nothing worked."

But it sounds like she knew what would help her all along. "One day, I begged my parents to take me to a casting," she says. "We went to New York, and that's where I started acting. Just on stage, my mother saw the change that was taking place in me. She saw my anxieties disappear. She found her daughter, the one who had this light and joy before school."

How incredible, right? And it's great how she turned to acting to help her overcome her anxiety instead of turning to more unhealthy means. She sounds truly grateful for what acting has done for her, on a completely different level than the riches and fame. This is how she explains it: "I finally found a way [to] open the door to a universe that I understood, that was good for me and made me happy, because I felt capable, whereas before I felt worthless."

She also says that she wants to live her life as normal as possible, which is certainly an admirable thing for a hot and popular 23-year-old actress to say. While aiming to live a "simple" life, she says that her best friend (what a lucky girl) helps keep her grounded as well. "At the end of a day of shooting, I can go home and hang out with her," JLaw says. Much better than going out and getting wasted or drugged up at a bar, huh?

A confession like this could, for us cynical folk, immediately make us think that all this actress wants is attention. But Jennifer has always been unforgiving and open about who she is and what she's about, and you can't help but admire her even more when discussing these deeply personal matters. Let's just hope that more young actors are inspired by and follow her example instead of the countless other bad ones permeating through Hollywood nowadays.

Do you think that Jennifer's revelation about social anxiety makes her more likable?
