Selena Gomez Takes a Surprising Stand on Casual Hookups

selena gomez on cover of december 2013 teen vogueSelena Gomez and ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber have been the subject of rumors galore, but one of the most sticking bits of buzz was that the two were casually hooking up despite being technically broken up. Sounds like that very well may have been the case, judging from the pop star/actress's latest remarks to Teen Vogue ...

Talking about how she feels about her young 20s so far, she admitted, "Part of you wants to have that rebellious feeling where you're just like, forget it -- I can do anything I want. I've tried it, and I've never been that girl. I'm always going to be the girl you want to take home to your parents, not for the night." Uh ... huh! So, if we read between the lines here: She tried to be a friend with benefits/hook-up buddy -- likely with Justin -- and it just never felt right, because she's serious girlfriend material.

I get it. I've been there -- thinking I could handle something that was all about the physical, no strings, etc. A lot of us go into situations like that thinking we're more cut out for it than we actually are -- and end up brokenhearted, disappointed, or simply acknowledging, like Selena, that we're more interested in a relationship.

That said, I'm not a fan of her choice of words, which also makes it sound like she believes there are women who are one night-stand types and others, like her, who men want to meet their parents. That those two women can't be one and the same. Newsflash: Those two women can be one in the same. And breaking -- women don't have to be virgins OR whores, much to the dismay of antiquated social and media-driven stereotypes that aggravatingly still box us into one or the other. Surprise, we can be open to one-night stands or casual sex at one time or another, enjoy that, then move on from it -- or not.

Oh well. Selena's still young, admittedly "very sheltered until about 18 or 19" and is only 21. She's still learning that the world isn't nearly as black and white -- and sex and relationships are a helluva lot more complicated than manufactured love songs would have us believe.

How do you feel about Selena's confession?
