Director Michael Bay Attacked With Most Unlikely Street Fight Weapon Ever

Michael BayHere is a strange story about director/producer Michael Bay that sounds straight out of one of his own movies: he was recently attacked by a transforming, exploding robot in a scene that required 63 shots of filming in one day and reportedly cost Paramount $195 million.

Okay, not really, but the famed action filmmaker WAS caught up in a bizarre violent confrontation on the set of Transformers 4 in Hong Kong this Thursday. Reports of the incident have been wildly varying as to whether or not Bay was being blackmailed at the time and how badly he was injured, but the latest account from his PR rep confirms that Bay did indeed fight off a crazed man who was -- I swear I am not making this up -- WIELDING AN AIR CONDITIONER AS A WEAPON.

Initial reports claimed Bay was approached during filming by two brothers demanding about $13,000 (BBC news said that the men may have been seeking “disturbance fees” for shops and businesses whose commerce was affected by the Transformers 4 production), and that Bay was injured on the right side of his face during the fight.

Today a press representative for Bay issued a clarifying statement about the incident:

Contrary to several erroneous news reports made today, Bay did not get hurt in a fight on set. The production company did have a bizarre encounter with a man (allegedly under the influence of a narcotic substance) who was wielding an air conditioning unit as a weapon. The man, who had earlier accosted several other crew members, rushed onto the set in Quarry Bay and swung the air conditioning unit directly at Bay’s head. The director ducked and wrested the air conditioner from his attacker, preventing what could have been a serious accident. The company’s security team quickly stepped in and subdued the assault. The police, who also scuffled with the assailant and two of his companions, ultimately arrested the three men. No one on the cast or crew was injured and the production immediately resumed filming without further incident.

That's quite the crazy start to filming, considering today was Transformers' first day of production in Hong Kong after shooting throughout the U.S. since May.

I can't say that I'm a huge fan of Michael Bay's movies, but I have to give him major props for forcibly de-arming his attacker, which sounds like no easy feat considering a heavy-ass metal thing was being swung at his head. Although for a guy known in the industry as being devoted to stylistic visuals and insanely expensive special effects, it must have felt a little disappointing to be charged by a guy holding an air conditioning unit. I mean, where were the giant fireballs and remotely-triggered nuclear weapons?

Had you heard about this weird story? Do you know Michael Bay was such a badass AC-wresting street fighter?
