New Coins Will Honor Prince George’s Christening & We Want Them

prince george kate middletonLadies and gentlemen, I have exciting news: It's a coin! The latest happy Royal Family news is that for the first time ever, special coins commemorating Prince George will be released by the Royal Mint. The coins will mark the christening of Prince George, which will take place on October 23 at Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby. But we've already told you all we know about that christening. Now I want to find out more about these coins!

They will be five-pound coins -- so yes, real currency, not just tin collectibles. The coins will be available in three metals: Solid gold, silver, and some other "more affordable option." (Maybe tin will come into play after all?) No designs have been revealed yet, but I'd like the Palace to know they should send photos directly to us here at The Stir forthwith as soon as they're available. We want to see them!

Anyone will be able to buy the coins. Since the christening will be a private event, this may be the only way you can participate in it, aside from gazing fondly at the official photographs after.

So that's fun, right? What do you think they'll look like? I wonder if they'll feature an image of baby George's head ... that would be a little weird, I think. Another first: Coin with baby's head on it. But it would also be cute, so I'm not complaining. Anyway, it sounds better than a commemorative china plate or mug, don't you think?

Would you buy a Prince George christening commemorative coin?
