Charlie Hunnam Turned Down Christian Grey Role -- Until He Was Threatened (VIDEO)

Charlie Hunnam

Sounds like no one wanted to play Christian Grey in the Fifty Shades of Grey film adapation. We've already heard how everyone from Ryan Gosling to Robert Pattinson to Matt Bomer turned it down. But little did we know that the guy who eventually took the part, Sons of Anarchy's Charlie Hunnam, didn't want it either! At a press event for the season premiere of the FX show, one of Charlie's directors revealed that the actor was struggling on set with whether or not to take the role, since he'd been offered it. But he had turned it down. So the director, convinced he should take it, actually threatened him. Yep, he told Charlie if he didn't take the part, he'd "burn his house down."

Director Peter Weller said he told the future Mr. Grey:

Charlie, Charlie, Charlie, what do you think, this is too pulpy or something? Well, let me give you the list of actors who did matinee idol style stuff, beginning with Cary Grant, let's go there. If you don't do this, I'll burn your house down.

Apparently attached to his house, Charlie accepted the role. Actually, his version of why he hesitated before accepting is a tad different. He says:

I just, there was a bit of a timing issue where I just wanted to ensure that I was going to have enough time to really do the preparation so I can bring this guy to life and do him justice and when they decided to push the schedule to accommodate that then I was a no-brainer and I was in.

Sooo, all of the stars aligned. Charlie's TV schedule was rearranged. His director threatened him. There's no way he couldn't take it after all of that. Charlie said of Christian:

He's an incredible, complex character. I've done a lot of violent, male-driven stuff, I thought it would be fun to do one for the ladies, you know?

And by "ladies" he even means his longtime girlfriend, Morgana McNelis, who also encouraged him to play the part. I have a feeling this guy will win over the Ian/Bomer crew eventually. Also, they should really give Christian Grey a British accent. Just sayin'.

Is he winning you over, ladies?
