Kate Middleton's Pre-Labor Jitters Are Totally Normal

kate middletonAs Royal Baby Watch 2013 continues, we find ourselves wondering: How is Kate Middleton feeling? Excited? Fatigued? Sick with worry? Oblivious? A friend of the family is spilling on the Duchess' prenatal state: Kate Middleton is feeling nervous about giving birth. "Naturally she is a little nervous about the big day, what new mum wouldn't be?" OH! Well. We knew that

There's more. The family friend says she's "feeling great" and that "she's full of energy and really rather used to the bump." So now that we all know Kate Middleton's physical and emotional state is entirely typical, we can go back to our own lives. It's okay, everyone! She's fine. Just a little nervous. As she should be. Because labor is sheer hell. Does she know that? Should someone warn her?

I'm kidding. I'm sure Kate is plenty prepared for what's to come, which is to say she has no fucking idea what's about to hit her. Or maybe she does. Labor is just one of those things -- you can read up on it, you can talk with other moms, you can watch videos, but you just don't know what it's going to feel like until you experience it yourself. And it's different for everyone. I have a sister-in-law who actually doesn't feel labor pains at all. (Life is cruel that way.) Meanwhile, I had the kind of back labor that nearly drove me insane.

But what's worse, I think, is not trying to find out what coming at all. I have a couple of friends who did this -- smart, accomplished, educated women who hadn't bothered to find out what happens during labor, the dilating, the different stages, none of that. They thought they'd just get that epidural-thingy and everything would be fine. Labor was a terrifying shock for them. One had a C-section, the other had complications with the epidural.

So I think it's smart to be a little nervous about labor. You don't have to be so anxious that you undermine yourself, but you should know there's an element of unpredictability. It could all go smoothly, as I'm sure Kate's will. Or ... things may happen. Kate is in excellent health, so I'm sure her labor will be just fine, even if it doesn't happen exactly how she expects it to.

Were you nervous before giving birth?
