‘Game of Thrones’ Season 4 Casts an Unexpected Oberyn Martell

Pedro PascalOne of the most anticipated new roles for the upcoming season 4 of Game of Thrones has been cast! Prince Oberyn Martell, aka the Red Viper, will be played by Chilean actor Pedro Pascal.

Sweet! Okay, so who is the Red Viper, exactly? Well, if you want to know what happens to him in A Storm of Swords, we've covered that already. (Don't click if you don't want any spoilers for the upcoming season.) As of now, we can say that, in the book, Martell has a lined face with thin eyebrows, black, snake-like eyes, black hair, and a sharp nose. He's pretty good-looking as well.

The Prince of Dorne is very charming and comes to King's Landing to get some information. His sister Elia was raped and murdered by Ser Gregor Clegane. The Mountain also murdered her son in front of her, and her daughter was slaughtered too. Now, Oberyn's itchin' for revenge.

Oberyn will soon find out what kind of role Tywin Lannister played in his sister's death (her and her two children's bodies were wrapped in Lannister cloaks and presented to the late King Robert Baratheon). Needless to say, he plays a rather major role in the last half of A Storm of Swords.

“This was a tough one,” say showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss about the casting. “The Red Viper is sexy and charming, yet believably dangerous; intensely likable, yet driven by hate. The boys love him, the girls love him, and he loves them all back. Unless your last name is Lannister. We found a fellow who can handle the job description and make it seem effortless. He wasn’t easy to find and he won’t be easy to stop.”

Awesome description of the prince, Benioff & Weiss. Kudos to you. Okay, back to the non-Westeros world: If you are curious, or haven't heard of him before, Pedro has an impressive TV show resume. He's has recurring roles on Graceland, Red Widow, and The Good Wife.

Can't wait to see what he looks like fully costumed -- and of course HBO rarely does any casting wrong when it comes to this series -- though, I'll admit, I was hoping for someone a little more, well, "exotic" looking. Are we still allowed to say that word in this day and age? Frankly, I was expecting someone with much sharper features and jet black hair, who looks a little more Middle Eastern; many of you were hoping for someone who looks more like Oded Fehr. But television is a magical thing, and I'm sure Pascal is super excited (as are we) to see Oberyn Martell come to life.

What do you think of Pedro Pascal as Prince Oberyn Martell?
