'The Purge' Is the Horror Story That Happens When Teens Don't Listen to Their Parents (VIDEO)

The PurgeThe concept for the new horror movie The Purge is one of the best concepts to come along in the genre in a long, long time. The year is 2022 and crime is at an all-time low, which is mostly due to the fact that there is an annual "purge" night, a 12-hour period during which all crime is legal and all medical and emergency personnel are suspended.

Starring Ethan Hawke as the father of a family of two teenagers (a boy and a girl), the movie isn't as flawlessly executed as I hoped. But it's a film about parenting and just how difficult it can be to raise children with good values in a messed up world and how defiant children can get their parents potentially killed. Without revealing too much of the plot, let me assure you this is a horror movie especially made for those of us with little ones we want to protect and care for.

Terrifying, no?

In the film, the teenage daughter's desire to be with a boy her parents disapprove of and their son's general disapproval of "The Purge" are two of the biggest sources of tension in the movie and the reason things go so wrong.

Any scary movie is going to resonate with parents just because we have so many fears in general. There isn't a single one of us who hasn't seen a scary movie and wondered: could I run that fast carrying my babies? Would we be able to hide quietly from that masked killer?

Had the son listened to his parents and respected "The Purge," there would have been far less bloodshed. On the other hand, who would want to raise the kind of child who would NOT want to save a person in peril?

It's the question at the heart of the film and the reason it's ultimately worth seeing. How far would you go to protect your family?
