Ryan Gosling Is Taking a Break From Acting & His Reasoning Is All Wrong

Ryan GoslingI hope you're sitting down right now, because I've got a difficult announcement to share. It's almost a little too hard for me to type … but in the name of entertainment faux-news, I must soldier on in order to cover this breaking and incredibly tragic story: Ryan Gosling is taking a break from acting.

Hey girl, I know. I know. I'm broken up about it too. There's some comfort to be found in the fact that it's what he seems to need right now -- and we all want Ryan Gosling to get what he needs (um, particularly if his needs happen to involve tongue-kissing a frumpy middle-aged mom of two from Eugene, Oregon) -- but part of his reasoning for stepping away from the spotlight might just blow your mind completely.

Gosling recently told the Associated Press that he's planning on taking a hiatus from the silver screen in the next months, saying,

I've been doing it too much. I've lost perspective on what I'm doing. I think it's good for me to take a break and reassess why I'm doing it and how I'm doing it. And I think this is probably a good way to learn about that.

Okay, I can respect that. After turning in so many critically-acclaimed performances over the last few years, he must be absolutely inundated with opportunities, and I can see wanting to take some time to evaluate his next moves so he can continue to do his best work.

But check out what ELSE he said:

I need a break from myself as much as I imagine the audience does.

Uh, no. No, sir, we do NOT need a break from you. Not even remotely. Who here would complain if Ryan Gosling starred in like twenty movies a year? LOOK NO HANDS.

To Gosling's credit, he's probably more tired of his work than we are, because he's been doing it since he was 8 years old. He says he prefers being an ensemble player ("There's a lot of pressure to be the lead of a film. I have done it. It's not my favorite way to work"), and that his efforts to immerse himself in roles have been a challenge to balance over the years:

I don't know what I'm doing. I haven't quite figured out what the balance is between being able to be lost in it — or try to, anyway — and then step outside of it. (…) The more opportunities I'm given, the more I learn about how easy it is to (expletive) it up. You fight for freedom and then you get it, and then you have enough rope to hang yourself. It's like trying to exercise some restraint because I do have so much freedom.

While I'm bummed that we might have to wait a while before seeing him onscreen again, I am once again amazed at what a rare Hollywood creature Ryan Gosling seems to be. Humble, sensitive, whip-smart, and more than willing to set aside fame to keep his priorities straight.

Plus, abs. (Sorry. Had to go there.)

What do you think about Ryan Gosling's acting hiatus? Do you think it's a smart move?
