'Mad Men' Season 6 Premiere Date Revealed & We've Got the Details!

mad men castAaaaand, just like that, Matthew Weiner has finally let the cat out of the bag! We have a premiere date for the return of Mad Men, people! On April 7 at 9 p.m. ESTAMC will air the two-hour season 6 premiere we have been waiting MONTHS FOR. Okay, so, we haven't been waiting nearly as long as we waited between season 4 and 5, but still. Anytime we have to go without Don and Co., it's a long time. And now we know what date to save, circle on our calendars, plan a Mad Men premiere costume 'n' cocktail party for -- the works! Eeeeee!

But wait! The premiere date's not all we got out of that secretive genius Weiner today! Whoohoo!

Of the premiere, Matt Weiner told Entertainment Weekly:

If you like the show, there’s a good chance you’ll like the premiere ... It is different than last year’s in a sense that it was my idea and I was just trying to give bang for a buck to an audience that I didn’t want to lose because we’d been away for so long. This year it’s really constructed like a film. It is its own story and hopefully it foreshadows the rest of the season ... You should know what happened at the end of last season before you see the episode. The whole season is in reference to last season.

Ya hear that, fair-weather fans? Better get on Netflix and start streaming!

And speaking of fair-weather ... Sounds like this season is going to be written with the Mad Men-loyal very much in mind. Weiner explains:

I want to acknowledge the fact that the audience knows [Don] very well, so what he does is never going to surprise them. How he does it and why he does it should surprise them.

Also important to note: Although the premiere will air earlier to accommodate the two-hour ep, beginning April 14, the show will go back to its original air time of 10 p.m. EST.

And yep, season 6 will be the second to last season. I guess it will take us into 1968, and then the final season -- season 7 -- will bring us up to 1969, complete with Neil Armstrong, Woodstock, you know, basically the climax of all things swinging '60s. And the climax of all things Don, Peggy, Joan, Roger, Betty ... Ugh, I'm heartbroken just thinking about it! But okay, we're not quite there yet. There's still plenty of Mad Men amazingness to come. And now we know exactly when we can tune in for it!

Will you be watching the season premiere? What do you think will happen?
