Lena Dunham Makes Howard Stern Grovel for 'Fat Chick' Comment

Lena DunhamI'm not the biggest Lena Dunham fan in the world (I feel stubbornly, pointlessly resistant to her popularity the way I am suspicious of other suddenly ubiquitous trends, like the Paleo diet or those TOMS shoes), but man do I love her for how she handled being called "a little fat chick" by Howard Stern. Instead of veering directly to the low road and pointing out that Stern himself looks like the swept-up remains of Slash's last haircut attached to a rake, which is totally what I would have done, Dunham called into Stern's radio show on Wednesday and graciously accepted his groveling, cowardly praise.

Yeah, Stern pulled a classic bully move with Dunham by ripping her to shreds last week, then doing a complete 180 when she actually confronted him over the fact that he said she was a "fat girl who kinda looks like Jonah Hill, and she keeps taking her clothes off, and it kind of feels like rape." He's singing a whole new tune now, thanks to Dunham's balls -- and his lack thereof.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not a Howard Stern hater. I often find him entertaining, and it wasn't exactly unexpected or out of character for him to say such a rude thing about Dunham. It was shitty, to be sure, but that's basically the persona he's built his career on, right?

But for him to back down like a whimpering dog when Lena Dunham called his show ... man, that's funnier than anything he could have come up with. After blasting her for being a "camera hog" and dishing out the insults on her appearance, yesterday he switched gears completely and gushed about how great he thinks she is:

I realize: Not only am I addicted, but I totally get you. I'm in love with you and your character. I just wanted to tell you that I love you, and I think you're terrific.

Haaaaa! What a tool.

She didn't quite let him off the hook without addressing the obnoxious "fat chick" comment, pointing out that,

I'm not that fat, Howard. I’m not super-thin, but I'm thin for, like, Detroit.

At the end of the call, Dunham proved she's more of a good sport than Howard Stern will ever be by saying,

I appreciate it and I appreciate your effort to rectify [this], but whether you’d done that or not, I’d have remained a [Howard Stern] enthusiast.

Okay, that's it. I'm officially on the Dunham Fan Train. She's smart, funny, far more confident than 95 percent of Hollywood, and she's only 26 years old. Suck on that, Howard.

What do think of this celebrity kerfuffle? Team Dunham, or Team Stern?
