Oscar Nominations Say 2012 IS Abraham Lincoln's Year

Oscar nominationsIt's that time of year again, when the Oscar nominations come out and make us all feel like we better rush to the movies. This morning's announcement ceremony was at 5:30 a.m. Pacific Standard Time, which was crappy for Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone (the announcers), but basically perfect for us East Coasters.

For me, this year's nominees could basically be called: "A list of movies I didn't see." Oops. Now, I have until February 24 (the day of the ceremony) to see nine movies. Oh, yes. Nine.

Is it just me, or did less movies used to be nominated? Anyway, I digress. Since the Best Picture nominees are all most people care about, here they are:

1.) Beasts of the Southern Wild

2.) Silver Linings Playbook

3.) Zero Dark Thirty

4.) Lincoln

5.) Les Miserables

6.) Life of Pi

7.) Amour

8.) Django Unchained

9.) Argo

I have only seen Les Miserables (she says with shame). In my defense, I just moved a few hundred miles from my home. But still, I am usually around at least half. Not this year, I guess.

From what I hear, Argo and Lincoln should get it. But that is from someone who hasn't seen Life of Pi, a film I have heard is absolutely breathtaking. Les Miserables was wonderful. And epic. And beautifully acted. But best picture? I don't think so. Not with Russell Crowe's singing (my ears still hurt and my face hurts from cringing).

But still, I am dying to see Django, Life of Pi, Argo, Silver Linings Playbook, and Zero Dark Thirty. Ask me again on February 23 and I am sure I will have a lot more to say!

This year is looks like it is ALL about Lincoln. The film received TWELVE nominations beyond best picture, including director for Steven Spielberg and acting honors for Daniel Day-Lewis, Sally Field, and Tommy Lee Jones. I am putting $50 on that one.

Viva la Oscar season!

How many of these have you seen? Which film do you favor?
