Miley Cyrus' Fantastic 'Jolene' Cover Makes Us Wish She'd Stick to Her Roots (VIDEO)

miley cyrusRemember waaaay back in 2006 when Miley Cyrus first stepped on the Disney Channel scene as Hannah Montana? Overnight, she was famous -- and mostly because she could act and sing. She was headed for pop stardom. Or so we thought. Nowadays, it's hard to remember exactly what Billy Ray's little girl is famous for ... Chopping off and dying her hair to look more like Pink? Being skinny? Being engaged to the kid from The Hunger Games? Taking silly pics and posting them on Twitter and Instagram?

Thankfully, some people still believe it's preferable to be famous for having actual abilities, real talent. Maybe even Miley herself -- who recently released a new (sort of) music video of her cover of her godmother Dolly Parton's 1974 hit "Jolene." Maybe she wanted to remind us that at the ripe ol' age of 20, she can actually still sing?!

Check it out ...

While she's still got nothin' on her godmother, that was still pretty awesome, right? Granted, as you can tell from her hair, this was recorded a little while back -- during early summer 2012's "Backyard Sessions," which feature Miley and her band playing some of her favorite songs, like "Jolene," Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go," James Shelton's "Lilac Wine," and Melanie Safka's "Look What They've Done to My Song, Ma." Very cool.

But now that I've seen this, I gotta say, knowing her next album is a collaboration with famed hip-hop producer Pharrell Williams and the fact that she says "a lot of the beats are produced hip-hop beats" worries me. Her voice and the power and emotion behind it seems to fit perfectly with these folksy, rock, and yes, country tunes. Here's hoping that one day she'll realize her strongest suit would be stickin' to her roots.

What do you think of this cover? What kind of album would you like to hear from Miley?
