Emma Watson in '50 Shades of Grey'? Maybe, Maybe Not

emma watson in harry potterLast week we reported that Fifty Shades of Grey movie producers Mike De Luca and Dana Brunetti may have their sights set on Emma Watson, of Harry Potter fame, to play Anastasia Steele. This week, Emma herself is setting the record straight. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, she revealed she has read "nothing" related to the project -- not even the book itself.

She went on to sound both amused and annoyed by the rumors, noting that she's even had to clarify the truth for friends and family: "I told them just because there are 60 articles on the Internet doesn’t mean it's any less true than if there are three or four." Sadly, she's right. But let's not write her off for the role just yet.

Maybe the gossip stemmed from a fan's wishful thinking ... or there really is behind-the-scenes buzz about her, originating from the producers. But it could be so behind-the-scenes that even she hasn't been clued into it. The truth is that actors probably know little more than we do until they're officially cast. And in the meantime, gossip can't help but abound! Emma even told EW:

There are so many movies you become attached to when I've literally never even received a phone call. It was the same way with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo -- I never even saw a script!

However, just because she hasn't actually heard anything official from folks working on the Fifty flick doesn't mean she might not be a contender. As E.L. James said last month, they're really far off from casting. Being that they have yet to hire a writer and a director, there's no script yet, so there wouldn't be anything for a potential Ana to read now, would there? So surely no actress has seen one ... or will see one for a while.

The fact of the matter is that I'll bet we all need to sit tight on this for quite a bit longer. But it doesn't hurt to muse about it in the meantime!

Are you anxious to find out who will play Ana or do you wish the rumors would stop swirling?
