Jim Carrey May Have Left 'Dumb & Dumber' Sequel & That's Smart

Jim CArreyDumb and Dumber, the 1994 classic gross-out comedy starring Jim Carrey, was a great film. "Great" as in Citizen Kane great? Of course not. But for what it is, it is a genuinely funny film. So when news broke that a sequel was bringing back the original cast, with the Farrelly brothers directing again, it was pretty exciting. For about a second.

Let me take you back to the days when Jim Carrey and his partner in stupidity, Jeff Daniels, were tooling around in their dog-shaped van, their good-natured idiocy getting them into all kinds of trouble. It was hysterical because Carrey's and Daniels' lack of brain cells was harmless and genuinely funny.

Fast forward to now and a sequel is in the works ... or WAS in the works. Jim Carrey has reportedly pulled out of the movie, which was to be titled Dumber and Dumber To (ha!), because he felt the movie studio wasn't showing enough "enthusiasm" for it. That could be code for the studio not wanting to pay him enough. Whatever the reason, it looks like Dumb and Dumber diehards might not get their sequel. And that might be smart.

While it might be good to see the rubbery-faced comedian return to form, Carrey is getting kind of up there to be playing this sort of character, ain't he? A 30-something slacker with zero common sense is kind of pathetic but still amusing. A 50-year-old dummy -- well, one would have hoped he'd either grow a few brain cells by middle-age or at least learn to stay out of trouble. A man that age acting like a dope is more sad than side-stitching.

Am I ageist? No. If I were saying Jim Carrey can no longer play romantic roles, can no longer be funny, or can longer appear on screen at all, that would be ageist. I'm saying that I feel sorry for an older dummy. And when I feel sorry for someone, it's hard to slap my knees at his hijinks.

Is Jim Carrey to old for a Dumb and Dumber sequel?
