Don't Call Cynthia Nixon's Brand New Marriage a 'Gay' Marriage

Sex and the City actress Cynthia Nixon may be with a woman named Christine Marinoni, but her marriage this weekend to her long time girlfriend/mother of her children is anything but a "gay marriage." There is no political agenda there. It's just love. And it's a beautiful thing.

It seems every time a celebrity gets married to a person of the same sex, we treat it like it's a political statement. It isn't.

The whole point of gay marriage is that it is JUST like straight marriage (shocking, I know) only it is not between a man and a woman.

They love each other just as much as a straight couple. They will fight just as much as any straight couple and they will be bored and excited and happy and sad over the course of their life together. Just like any straight couple.

Are we happy for Cynthia Nixon and Christine Marinoni? Absolutely. Love is always something to celebrate and marriage is a worthy and lovely and meaningful pursuit.

But it is not a political statement. It is not a rally or a petition and it is not a cry for attention. I hope at some point we get to a point where reporting a celebrity marriage is just that. There is no need to say whether it was a gay marriage or a straight marriage. When Reese Witherspoon married last year, did anyone say it was a STRAIGHT MARRIAGE? No. We did not have to.

Nixon's marriage is not a lesbian marriage. It's a marriage. The same as mine, the same as yours and the same as anyone's. They just had to wait a longer time for it to be legal in New York state.

Being against gay marriage is something I will never understand, but mostly because I know so many gay people who are married and there is not one bit of difference between their marriage and mine. We all fight about money and sex and who took the garbage out. We all adore each other and resent each other in equal measure and we all fight and make up and fight again.

Let's stop differentiating between gay and straight marriage and just call it what it is: marriage. Love. Passion.

Congratulations to the happy couple.

Do you get tired of hearing about "gay" marriage?
