Gay or Not, Raven Symone Deserves to Grow Up

raven symone in sister act broadwayWell, the National Enquirer's Raven Symone "Gay Shocker!" story is out, and it's exactly what various gossip sites promised -- and then some. They've detailed Raven's alleged lesbian love affair with America's Next Top Model contestant AzMarie Livingston, and even explain how the actress reportedly ended up coming to grips with her sexuality.

See, apparently, her family is none too happy about all of this, and The Enquirer's source says Raven "feels her parents are still trying to treat her like she's a kid, and she's told them she's going to do what she wants. ... She's at a point now where she doesn't care what her family thinks."

Good for her! You know, I get the feeling that if this is true, and she has struggled with her sexuality, it hasn't helped that in the public's mind, she's one of those perpetual child stars.

Not only do some of us see her as sweet tot Olivia from The Cosby Show, but into her early 20s, Raven was still a Disney sweetheart, starring on That's So Raven and The Cheetah Girls made-for-TV movies. Even more so than her peers Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan, it's been hard for Raven to break out of that kiddie/tween entertainment trap. It wasn't until this past year, really, that she's seemed to make a notable dent in it.

The "close source" goes on to explain, "Raven has lost almost 30 pounds, has done a whole image makeover, and now she is the star of Sister Act on Broadway."

In other words, she's all grown up! And seems to be more and more comfortable in her own skin. Having a more focused view of her (professional and personal) identity is the obvious extension of all of that.

Thank goodness! Because how aggravating must it be to feel like you're never going to be able to grow up and be your own person, on your own terms? Regardless of the rumors, no matter if she's actually gay, straight, bi, she should be able to move on from her past. It's time for her family and for anyone who longs for Olivia or Raven or Galleria to let Raven Symone finally be whoever she wants to be and truly is.

Be honest -- do you still see Raven as a child star?
