Kristen Stewart Hates 'Twilight' (According to the Media)

I'm not really what you'd call Kristen Stewart's biggest fan, but I'm starting to wonder if my less-than-flattering image of her has less to do with who she actually is as a person, and more to do with how she gets portrayed in the media.

To be totally honest, when I think of Stewart, I tend to think of phrases like sulky, eye-rolly, prone to complaining about the franchise that made her a household name. But after hearing how Kristen Stewart recently "dissed" Twilight in a "shocking" interview—and then reading what she actually said—it seems to me that her bad reputation may be as fictitious as the characters she plays.

Remember how Stewart got a raft of shit for calling Twilight fans' enthusiasm "thoughtless"? Here's what she really said:

Anywhere we’d go for Twilight was a psychotic situation. The sound was deafening, and it’s thoughtless, as well ... You get a slew of all these bullshit questions like, "What’s it like to kiss a vampire?" and "How much do you love Robert?" Then you’ll get one that’s actually real, but you’re like, "No, I can’t right now, I can’t even consider [it]."

I'm not actually sure she's talking about the fans, here. To me it sounds more like she's referring to the kinds of stupid questions asked by interviewers—but it was certainly spun as "Kristen Stewart hates Twilight fans OMG!"

She also earned some angry buzz in 2010 when she was accused of being sick of playing Bella. In reality, the drama was stirred up over this comment from her Welcome to the Rileys director:

[Kristen]‘s been playing this same character in—what?—two or three movies now, and that frustrates her ... She wants to be taken seriously as an actress—and the crazy thing is, before Twilight, she was doing that kind of work ... She’s very proud of her work in this movie.

Okay, so 1) those are his words, not hers, and 2) the dude was clearly trying to promote his own movie by implying that Stewart's performance in it was sooooo much better than in Twilight.

The latest in Stewart's supposed anti-Twilight campaign came during an interview with Australia’s Film Ink magazine, in which she reportedly flat-out says that that Snow White is a better role than Bella. Again, that's the spin—here's what she actually said:

It is fairly common to have your story as a woman, even if you’re the protagonist, facilitated by all of the male characters. It’s so rare to have a female lead character being so proactive. She pushes her own story forward, rather then being affected by all of the outside elements. Hopefully we do that, I’m really proud to be a part of something like that. It’s always food for women to feel empowered.

I mean, I can see how she probably finds this role more rewarding than Twilight, but is this really "harsh words for her passive character Bella Swan"? Or is she just echoing what many are saying about Snow White and the Huntsman: that it's a Hollywood anomaly because it's led by two strong female protagonists? For all I know, she may just be spouting off one of the marketing bullet points for the film, but at any rate, I hardly think it's a deliberate dig at Twilight.

I think I'd personally warm up to Kristen Stewart more if she smiled at the camera once in a while, but it's pretty unfair to expect that she spend all her publicity time basking in obsequious gratitude for the vampire saga that sent her fame into the stratosphere. I'm sure the truth is that she's more than ready to move on from the role (and really, who could blame her?), but if anyone's coming across as eager to drum up a beef between her and the franchise, it's the media.

Do you think Kristen Stewart's Snow White comment was a diss against Twilight?
