'Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23' Has More to Offer Than James Van Der Beek (VIDEO)

don't trust the b in apartment 23James Van Der Beek may be best known as Dawson Leery, but I predict that soon, he might just be known for playing ... himself. That's just one of the crazy fun plot points in the new sitcom Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23, which premiered last night. While Van Der Beek as Van Der Beek is a reason in itself to tune in, the main characters, June (Dreama Walker) and Chloe (Krysten Ritter) and their story is equally entertaining.

The premise: June's 26, wide-eyed, innocent, engaged, and, of course, Midwestern. She moves from Indiana to the Big Apple straight out of grad school for a cushy job at a mortgage company (which is also providing her with a cushy apartment). But upon arriving, she finds out the company is imploding, due to some kind of Bernie Madoff-style debacle. Thus, she's jobless. And also homeless ... that is, until she meets Chloe.

Chloe is a party girl with an agenda: She has a penchant for making roomies pony up their first, last, and security, then driving them mad until they move out. She also dated Van Der Beek for five seconds, but then he became her "straight gay BFF." Hilarious!

What's even better is that the pilot was peppered with not just tons of Dawson's Creek jokes -- amazingly, Paula Cole's "I Don't Want to Wait" plays in the background while James gets his many hook-ups on -- but also smart twists from both female leads. For instance, you don't expect June to fight back when she realizes Chloe's trying to take her for a ride or for her to thank Chloe after she attempts to have sex with June's fiance. (Turns out, she was doing her a favor!) And you don't expect Chloe to have a softer side. But they do!

In other words, Don't Trust is totally primed to be one of those endearingly quirky shows that fights stuffy sitcom formula. Woohoo! Could it be? Might we have another Friends on our hands here? It's possible. Especially if the show's creator, Nahnatchka Khan (American Dad) and writers continue to deliver snappy writing, social commentary from a Millennial point of view, a sassy take on female relationships, and oh yeah, more Dawson James Van Der Beek. I for one will definitely be tuning in on Wednesday nights. The only thing that could make this show even better is bringing Pacey Joshua Jackson and Joey Mrs. Tom Cruise on for guest appearances.

Here's a great clip from last night where Chloe gets owned by her new roomie ...
