Christopher Plummer Saves Oscar Night From Being a Total Flop (VIDEO)

When the most thrilling things to happen are a "maybe but not really" nipple slip and Angelina's leg getting its own Twitter account, you know the night was in serious trouble. Still, there were a few rare moments of inspiration, including Octavia Spencer winning Best Supporting Actress, The Artist racking up awards right and left, and, of course, Christopher Plummer, who took home the award for Best Supporting Actor. In fact, Plummer's acceptance speech was so charming that he may have single-handedly saved the night from being a total bust.

At 82, Plummer may be the oldest Oscar winner ever, but that didn't stop him from being one of the best dressed men of the entire night. Nobody except Captain von Trapp himself could make a blue velvet tuxedo look so cool. But it was Plummer's speech that stole the show: He began with a bit a humor that gave Billy Crystal a run for his money, gazing at the Oscar statute and joking: "You’re only two years older than me darling, where have you been all of my life?" In a night of bad, relentless old people jokes (thanks Billy!), it was nice to hear a genuine laugh out of the audience.

Plummer went on to deliver one of the most gracious and heartfelt speeches of the night, saying that he was born "already rehearsing my Academy acceptance speech, but it was so long ago mercifully for you I’ve forgotten it." He then ran through the usual list of people to thank before giving what I think is one of the best tributes I've ever heard in my long history of watching awards shows: He thanked his wife, saying that she "deserves the Nobel Peace Prize for coming to my rescue every day of my life." I can only hope one day someone talks about me that way.

Anyone who saw Beginners knows that Plummer certainly deserved to take home the top prize. But now that we've seen how humble and grateful he is for the recognition, it makes his win all the more satisfying.

Were you happy to see Christopher Plummer finally get an Oscar?
