Jessica Simpson's Bizarre 'Sandwich Shot' Pregnancy Craving Makes Me Hungry
I know this makes me a shallow, bitter person, but I hate when celebrity moms talk about how their pregnancy cravings were for fresh papaya juice or arugula chips or whatever. "Oh, I just couldn't make it through the day without my artisan lettuce salad and goji smoothie!" Really, that's so weird, I had the exact same problem. I don't know what I would have done without my classically-trained fair-trade organic chef.
Which is why I kind of love Jessica Simpson for being so unabashedly normal when it comes to confessing her favorite pregnancy snack. Instead of sticking to the health-food humblebrag, Simpson's description of her current number one craving put a smile on my face. I can't say I've ever considered downing a PB&J like a tequila shot before—but now that I've read about it, I kind of want to give it a try.
Simpson recently described her comfort food concoction to Rachael Ray, and frankly, it sounds ingenious:
This week it's peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, toasted. And then, I'll put some salt on my hand like I'm taking a tequila shot and then take a bite of the sandwich.
You guys, I would eat that SO HARD, and I'm not even pregnant. Toasted PB&J with extra salt? I don't mean to overshare but I am involuntarily kegeling right now.
It's funny how there are certain food combinations that just call to you during pregnancy. For me it was liverwurst on rye-flavored Triscuits—oh man, that savory combination of crunchy, salty, and creamy was the best. Are you quietly barfing into your cupped hands at the thought of eating liverwurst? Well, WE CAN'T ALL CRAVE PAPAYA, OKAY?
I also craved salt and vinegar chips, tropical flavored Jelly Bellies, banana peppers, and one time I crumbled a fistful of graham crackers into a glass of milk in order to lustfully drink the resulting sludge and I swear to god it was the best thing I've ever consumed in my entire life. I wouldn't say I ate junk food every single day during my pregnancies, but man, nothing lit up my pleasure chakras back then like salty/sweet/spicy foods.
Which is all to say, I can absolutely identify with the impulse that drove Jessica Simpson to look at her sandwich, look at the salt shaker, look at her hand, and think, hmmmmm. I just wish I'd come up with the PB&J shot myself, because I'd trademark that shit and sell it as an Applebee's happy hour item.
Did you crave any weird foods when you were pregnant? Did you ever invent your own pregnancy-specific meal?
