Betty White Won SAG Award Because She's Betty White (Of Course)

betty white sag awardsHere's the thing: If you're a super-talented celeb up for a prestigious honor like, say, the 2012 SAG Award for Best Actress in a TV Series -- Comedy and you lose out to another nominee, you're allowed to be kind of miffed. Especially if you're as awesome as, say, Tina Fey in 30 Rock or Sofia Vergara in Modern Family.

There is, however, an exception to that rule. Even if you are Tina Fey.

You are NOT allowed to be anything but graciously, glowingly happy for the actress who steals your rightful place as winner if that actress is 90 YEARS OLD.

Like, say, Betty White.

Look, it's not like Betty White didn't deserve to win Best Actress in a TV Series -- Comedy for Hot in Cleveland. I mean, she's spent her entire life being Betty White. It's all pretty much gravy at this point.

But I do think White's win proves a widely accepted but generally unspoken truth about award shows ...

The Sentimental Favorite factor is a LOT more powerful than most people will admit. Sure, Mary Tyler Moore was the one who officially received the Lifetime Achievement Award this year, but what was White's nod if not a tribute to her astonishingly long and accomplished career?

Not to be morbid, but there can't be too many more award shows are in the woman's future. Plus, this past year was arguably The Year of Betty White ... how many showbiz types go out on that kind of high note? Give the lady a prize!

It's always seemed to me that the Hollywood awards circuit is more of a marathon than a sprint (excepting the occasional catastrophic upset, of course). And Betty White has been on the run for a long, long time.

Do you think Betty White deserved the SAG Award for Hot in Cleveland?
