Zooey Deschanel Divorce Filing Reveals Fascinating Financial Information

Zooey DeschanelNews today that Zooey Deschanel has officially filed for divorce from Ben Gibbard comes as no big surprise. We learned back in November that she and the Death Cab for Cutie frontman had separated, and since there have been no signs of a reconciliation, it seemed only a matter of time before the actual deed was done.

According to People, she filed the papers on December 27. The cause given for the split was a standard "irreconcilable differences." Sigh. It's almost too depressing to even talk about another Hollywood split and try to analyze why it didn't work out this time.  It seems like they never work, and it's all getting quite mundane

In this case, however, the papers filed did at least contain some pretty interesting details.

TMZ got a hold of them, and apparently Deschanel's attorney included a bunch of her financial information that laid out specifically how much money she has, how much she spends each month, and on what. Now that's the kind of celebrity information I find fascinating.

Here are some of details as reported by TMZ:

She makes about $95,000 a month

She spends only (only, ha!) about $22,550 a month on things including some of the following:

  • $1,000 on groceries and other household items (doesn't seem outrageous)
  • $500 on dining out (sounds low unless she's getting lots of comped meals)
  • $800 on utilities
  • $2,000 for clothes (Can you imagine? Though if I made $95K a month, I'm not sure I'd stop there.)

That "frugality" has allowed her put more than $1.5 million in the bank. She has no credit card debit (how responsible of her) and has almost $2 million more in stocks, bonds and real estate, etc. In other words: She's loaded.

Besides being interesting to see such a close-up look at a celeb's spending habits, it also is probably a pretty close-up look at why their marriage ended ... or at least I'm sure many will speculate that it is. Maybe she didn't need him anymore? Her success threatened him perhaps? I have no idea if an imbalance in their relationship financially or otherwise contributed to its demise, but it certainly does seem to fit a pretty typical pattern when the scales of success are tipped heavily in one direction -- especially when it's a woman in the lead.

On the bright side, it does seem like for a divorce they're doing it the best way possible -- without a lot of drama, just a desire not to be married anymore. As she told People after their initial split, "We're friendly. It's all fine." Moving on ...

Do you think Zooey Deschanel's success contributed to her marriage's failure?
