'Portlandia': Everything You Need to Know to Jump Into Season 2 (VIDEO)

portlandiaFor the first time in about a bazillion years, there's so much good TV out there I can't even keep up with it. Tops on my list of "Shows I Need to Start Watching Already" is Portlandia. People have been telling me how insanely funny the IFC series starring Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein is since it debuted last January. Now that Season 2 is about to premiere (January 16), it's definitely time for me to get my act together and cram as much Portlandia into the next couple of weeks as possible!

If you're a newcomer to the Portlandia scene like me, here's a bit of background ...

The show started as a "fun summer activity" for Armisen (SNL) and Brownstein (vocalist/guitarist for Sleater-Kinney). "We'd be hanging out in Portland and shooting whatever made us laugh, and that evolved into Portlandia," says Armisen. Indeed, it's the real-life friendship between Armisen and Brownstein that gives Portlandia's off-kilter cast of characters such great chemistry, he says. "You know how you meet somebody and you just know that person is going to be your friend? That's how it was with us."

So you can expect a spontaneous, sort of "you're in on our private joke" kind of vibe from every episode, which is about as awesome as comedy can get. Especially when you include guest stars like Kyle MacLachlan, Jason Sudeikis, Aimee Mann and Gus Van Sant.

Ultimately, though, Portlandia's sense of humor is really one you've got to experience for yourself. Among last season's best shorts: The kitschy couple obsessed with sticking bird cut-outs on everything from toast to tote bags ("Put a Bird on It!"); the, er, resourceful couple with a very extreme take on recycling ("Dumpster Divers"); an "Adult Hide and Seek League" that brilliantly skewers Peter Pan-esque trends like Extreme Frisbee.
