Giuliana Rancic's Post-Surgery Decision Shows Her Strength

Giuliana Rancic has taken some flak in the past for being too waif-like, but it seems she's got nearly unimaginable reserves of strength beneath that delicate exterior. After being very open about her struggle with infertility, including a heartbreaking miscarriage in 2010, she then went on to share her fight against breast cancer.

Rancic was back at her job at E! News a week after her initial lumpectomy and radiation, but when she announced that she had decided to undergo a double mastectomy, I'm sure most people figured she'd take a serious break from working. I mean, as a celebrity she doesn't really have to worry about her PTO running out, right?

However, it's probably not surprising to those who really know her that Rancic was back on the set of E! two weeks after her mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Clearly, this is a woman who's willing to fight for what she wants—motherhood, her health, and a normal life with a job she finds rewarding.

She was back at E! on Tuesday, and said in a statement,

Even though I moved a tad slower than usual today, everyone welcomed me back with open arms and it was a wonderful homecoming.

She added,

It feels great to be back at work. I wasn't sure whether I was going to return to E! News this week or after the new year. The last thing I wanted to do was rush my recovery. Thankfully, I've been feeling better every single day since surgery and this weekend my doctors gave me the green light to get back to work.

Some may question her decision to come back so quickly, but I think I can understand where she's coming from. If she's feeling good and there's no medical reason to wait, why not return to work? It seems obvious that her job is important to her, and after such a tumultuous couple years of infertility, IVF, and scary health issues, it's probably comforting to get back into a normal routine.

At the same time, I find her really inspiring for choosing to do so, because she definitely didn't have to go back to work. By getting back in front of the camera (and looking fantastic, by the way), she's sending a strong message about survival and beating the odds. Her choice to be so public with all the challenges she's faced in the last few years is incredibly brave, and I'm sure she's connecting with many women who have fought similar battles.

Whatever comes next for Giuliana Rancic, I'm sure she'll handle it with grace and strength. I'm pulling for her, and I hope 2012 is the year she's able to create the family she's been longing for for so long.

Are you surprised Giuliana Rancic returned to work so quickly after her surgery?
