'Dexter' Season Finale Teases an Edgy Season 7

The Dexter season finale for season six offered everything any rabid Dexter fan could have wanted. There was murder and suspense, fear and love, and plenty of Debra Morgan's cursing. But even more, there was the biggest piece of the puzzle, the one we have all been waiting for since season one.

The show has an uncanny knack for grabbing ahold of the viewer and refusing to let go until the end. It also has a knack for delivering a shocking ending that has fans waiting for months with baited breath for the next season.

For those who didn't see it, it would be wise not to read any further. There will be massive spoilers ahead.

The final 30 seconds of the season six finale finally showed Deb discovering the truth about Dexter. She watched him plunge the knife into Travis Marshall. If there was any hope of lying about that, it's pretty lost. His crime looks well-organized and well-rehearsed. As a seasoned detective, Deb will not believe he only did it once.

So now what? Obviously Deb's discovery is going to make season seven interesting, but there is no way the series could continue if Deb rats Dexter out. So one must assume she keeps his secret, which really, for her, isn't so much of a stretch.

This season had Deb falling in "love" with Dexter or, better said, discovering she had actually loved him all along. OK, so they aren't blood siblings, but I can't be the only one who was a little repulsed by this storyline. Still, all that aside, the "love" is needed because it's the only way we are going to buy that Deb won't turn Dexter in.

Over the years, Dexter has become a more nuanced character, one actually capable of love, especially for those who can see the real him. So now, with this new revelation, if Deb can still accept him, this storyline may be the best thing to happen to Dexter.

Of course, having spent the last five seasons feeling like Dexter and Deb were brother and sister, seeing them smooch could give me some agita as a fan. But it also kind of feels like a natural progression. After all, other than Dexter, who loves Harrison more than Deb?

The end of season six segued nicely into season seven. Obviously the intern is going to factor. Why did he send that hand to Dexter? What is the obsession? Deb now knows the truth. Will she block it out of trauma? Will she protect Dexter? Will she join him?

Unfortunately, we fans have to wait a few months (read: almost a year), but the good news is, we have a lot to think about between now and then.

What did you think of the finale?
