J.R. Martinez Is An Inspiration to All 'Wounded Warriors'

j.r. martinezApparently even U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta is a fan of Dancing With the Stars! Or at least he's a fan of DWTS champ J.R. Martinez. In fact, Panetta was so impressed with the Iraq war veteran's recent victory that he wrote him a letter AND called him on the phone to extend a personal invitation to the Pentagon.

After all, Martinez is the "talk of the troops," according to Pentagon spokesman Douglas Wilson. Panetta's letter explains why:

"Over the course of this competition, your spirit captivated the nation and your victory sends a powerful message about the strength and resilience of our wounded warriors," he wrote.

Well said, Secretary Panetta. I would just add one thing ...

Martinez sends a powerful message about the strength and resilience of the human spirit in general. Of course Martinez is uniquely inspiring to veterans, but all of us can learn from his example ... even if we're only wounded on the inside.

Martinez is remarkably brave, obviously, but what truly sets him apart is the fact that he appears to be completely free of bitterness and resentment. He even credits his DWTS success to his military training and says he's "proud" to have served in uniform. He doesn't blame the military for what happened to him. He doesn't see himself as a victim. He doesn't flinch in the public eye -- the man is a motivational speaker and a performer!

It's thrilling to see Martinez get the recognition he deserves from the forces he served so selflessly. No doubt he'll continue to amaze us all.

What do you think J.R. Martinez will do next?
