Jennifer Hudson Gives Chilling Recount of Her Life-Saving Choice

Jennifer HudsonIn October 2008, Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother, and nephew were brutally murdered in Chicago. Jennifer could have very well been killed as well, but she wasn't there. Instead she was in Florida at her fiance David Otunga's urging, and, according to People, she credits him with saving her life.

Though she has rarely spoken publicly about the murders, in a recent interview with Ebony magazine, she described that fateful trip. "That's one of the things that saved my life, because I could have been home with my mom then," she said.

She continued in the interview:

I flew out to see him; that's why I'm still here. I've never said that before, and I can't believe I just said that now. But I didn't know. He was just like, 'I'm going to this wrestling thing, and it's in Tampa. I'm going out there now, so you can come out there and see me versus going home.'

It's one of those chill-inducing stories that makes us wonder about all the what ifs. Who knows what would have happened had she chosen not to go to Florida. Maybe she would have been home at the time of the murders, maybe she wouldn't have. Maybe her presence there would have altered the course of what happened, or perhaps it could have made it worse. The fact is, with hindsight things appear clear, but they never really are.

So while I think it's a sweet story to say her fiance saved her life (and perhaps more sensationalized by the media than what she really said), I think fate, someone up above, or just plain luck is likely the real -- albeit less romantic -- reason she's still alive. If the opposite had happened -- she died in a plane crash on the way to see him, or some other horrible fate -- we would never blame him for her death.

We all make life-changing decisions every day. From the route we drive to work, to boarding an earlier flight, we never know how those little things could have a big impact in our lives. Fortunately for Hudson, this one worked out in her favor, and though the pain of her loss lingers, she has found strength to carry on, and her resilience is inspirational to all as we face the results of our own choices.

Have you ever felt like you escaped death like Jennifer Hudson?
