'Glee' Star Charice Pempengco Faces Father's Murder Like a Fighter

Charice PempengcoYou may recognize Charice Pempengco as the incredibly talented and competitive Sunshine Corazon on Glee. But things are kind of grim in the actress's world today. The songbird's 40-year-old father, Ricky Pempengco, was murdered in the Philippines after a run-in with another man in a grocery store. Authorities say Charice's father was allegedly stabbed in the chest and back with an ice pick. Ugh, so disturbing ... and brutal!

The 19-year-old was estranged from her father, and that's probably a good thing, being that life with him sounds like -- to be blunt -- it was a total nightmare.

Back in '08, Charice confessed to Oprah that when she was just 3 years old, her dad would threaten and choke her mother. She said she remembers that he once pointed a shotgun at her mom, and as a child, she remembers she "couldn't do anything." Gaaah. See what I mean -- sounds like a NIGHTMARE!

But at the same time, it seems like she's been able to rise above this history she endured and look back on the good times. She tweeted last night (in Tagalog and English) thanks to her fans for their support and also a few words about the memory of her father:

I just want you to know that we had a really great relationship before all the trouble started. My mother didn't know that when I was young, my father told me that he wanted me to be a soldier because I'm a fearless woman. I loved him, and I will still love him. He's still my dad after all.

Wow, right?! For someone so young to present such an incredibly mature and grounded front in the face of something like this is incredible. It seems like she's been able to really maintain perspective here and remember her father in a very three-dimensional, honest, and even loving and warm way. Good for her!

Upon hearing the news, Charice cancelled a performance to fly back to Singapore to be with her family. I'm sure being with one another right now will do wonders to promote healing after what can only be described as a horrible tragic mess.

Does this make you admire Charice even more now?
