Lady Gaga in Lettuce Dress Would Be a Total Lie

lady gagaAs time wears on, it becomes more and more clear that the meat dress Lady Gaga wore to the 2010 MTV VMAs was one of those pop culture fashion moments that will live on FOREVER. Apparently, it made such an impression on PETA India that they've been campaigning for her to wear a completely different outfit, it seems, to "make up for" the sirloin couture. When she visits India this weekend and takes part of in the unveiling of the country's first Formula 1 race, the activists hope she'll wear a lettuce dress. Uh ... huh. And by doing so, they hope she would be making a statement about the "importance of not eating meat."

Ha, well, I get it, and yay for vegetarianism, but at the same time, I'm not so keen on what PETA India is obviously trying to do to the Mother Monster.

First of all, they're clearly missing the point of the meat dress. Many of us did when Gaga debuted it and have ever since. Let's clear that up, shall we? The crazy raw outfit had nothing to do with Gaga's love for red meat. The Franc Fernandez dress, boots, hat, and purse was her way of speaking out against Don't Ask, Don't Tell. She explained:

It is a devastation to me that I know my fans who are gay ... feel like they have governmental oppression on them. That's actually why I wore the meat.

So, you see, it's not as though the lettuce dress would exactly serve a "counter" to the meat dress. Beyond that, it sounds like PETA just wants to USE Gaga as a way to promote their message. They'd like her to pose for photos in a lettuce gown -- "constructed leaf by leaf on the singer's body, taking some five to six hours" -- to show her reverence for vegetarianism. But ... um ... she's not a vegetarian? She's not Alicia Silverstone! The goals of PETA India are admirable, but they probably aren't exactly Gaga's goals. Don't they realize ... this "statement" they want her to make with freakin' "lettuce couture" won't mean anything if it isn't genuine! Silly activists.

Guess we'll see if Gaga ultimately ends up giving in and letting them turn her into their personal billboard, but if I know anything about Gaga, it's that she's not going to preach what she doesn't practice. Nor should she have to.

What do you think about this lettuce dress fiasco?
