Denis Leary's 'Rescue Me' Finale Tease Isn't a Spoiler (VIDEO)

After eight years, FX's beloved Rescue Me is nearing its end. The series finale airs tonight at 10 p.m., and many fans have one question in mind for the final episode: will Tommy Gavin be killed?

That was a plot twist people had in mind even before Denis Leary was a guest on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon yesterday, but after Leary's appearance, everyone's wondering if he dropped the ultimate spoiler about what's going to happen in tonight's show.

Here's what he had to say (note: POTENTIAL spoiler ahead!):

When Fallon facetiously asked Leary what goes down in the final episode, Leary said the final scene involved a funeral—and seemed to imply it might be his own:

In the final scene that we shot ... there's a funeral scene, and I was off-camera that day. Ooh, could be a clue.

Blogs have been lighting up today with breathless chatter over whether or not Leary really gave away the fate of his character. After all, in the last episode, Ladder Company 62 was trapped in a building that had just been blown to hell by a giant explosion, so it's not much of a stretch to imagine that Tommy's the guy in the coffin.

I don't think that's what's going to happen, though. Take a look at how Leary delivers this so-called spoiler:

If you ask me, he's just messing with the fans. I simply can't believe that he'd so casually reference such a huge piece of the story. I could be wrong—it surely wouldn't be the first time I've confidently issued a prediction that ended up being way off (I had Breaking Bad's Jesse Pinkman dying about a thousand deaths in seasons 2-3)—but I'm guessing there's another reason Leary was off-camera for the funeral scene. Maybe he's injured, maybe this funeral has nothing to do with his fellow firefighters, maybe the funeral is less about someone in particular and more about the final ending of the show and Tommy's off in his head imagining his ghosts for one last goodbye.

I used to watch Rescue Me religiously, but it kind of lost me during the last couple seasons. Maybe because nothing could match the emotional punch of season 2. (I won't spoil it for those who haven't watched, but for those who know what I'm talking about: gahhhhhhhhh pass the tissues.) The locker-room camaraderie was always fun, but I got tired of Tommy, Sheila, and Janet's entanglements, and of course those ever-present specters that haunt Tommy's psyche.

Still, it's been a good series, maybe even a great series, and I'll be interested to see how they wrap things up tonight. Here's my predication, despite Leary's supposed slip of the tongue: Tommy lives. I'm thinking maybe it's Lou who doesn't make it.

What do you think is going to happen in the finale? Do you think Denis Leary really did spoil the ending?
