15 Freddie Mercury Quotes to Honor Queen Frontman's 65th Birthday (VIDEO)

Freddie MercuryHere's a little tidbit that might just make you feel old. It's been 20 years since complications from the AIDS virus claimed Freddie Mercury. The Queen frontman should be celebrating his 65th birthday this week, on September 5. Instead the man who taught us to worship the power of a fat bottomed girl and provided every winning sports team for the past three decades their pick of anthems to play while they cart their new trophy off the field (Another One Bites the Dust or We are the Champions both do nicely) passed away in 1991.

He left us with the likes of Lady Gaga and Katy Perry -- who dressed as Mercury this week to raise money for his charity -- to give audiences both a singer and a character onstage. But really, can anyone ever match Freddie?

To honor what should have been Mercury's birthday, the band will pay tribute to their flamboyant leader by streaming the iconic "Queen Live at Wembley" all Labor Day on its YouTube page. It will give us another look at one of history's most complex songwriters -- the multiple key changes and dozens of chords that showed up in just one Queen song. But if you want to really remember the raw vocal talent of Freddie Mercury, you have to take a look at the words he spoke.

So let's celebrate the birthday of the man born Farrokh Bulsara with a look at some quotes that remind us just what a character Freddie was:

1. I dress to kill, but tastefully.

2. I won't be a rock star. I will be a legend.

3. I'm just a musical prostitute, my dear.

4. A concert is not a live rendition of our album. It's a theatrical event.

5. Modern paintings are like women: You'll never enjoy them if you try to understand them.

6. I always knew I was a star, and now the rest of the world seems to agree with me.

7. What will I be doing in 20 years' time? I'll be dead, darling! Are you crazy?

8. The reason we're successful, darling? My overall charisma, of course.

9. The bigger the better; in everything.

10. We've gone overboard on every Queen album. But that's Queen.

11. I'm as gay as a daffodil, my dear!

12. Money may not buy happiness, but it can damn well give it!

13. Onstage, I am a devil. But I'm hardly a social reject.

14. We're fussy and finicky and have very high standards. If a song can't be done properly, we'd rather it isn't done at all.

15. I guess I've always lived the glamorous life of a star. It 's nothing new -- I used to spend down to the last dime.

Take a look at Queen performing Bohemian Rhapsody, a song that's chock-full of Freddie quotes. Do any of today's performers hold a candle to Freddie Mercury? What's your favorite Queen song?
