'Teen Mom' Amber Portwood Learned Something in Rehab, Hopefully

leah portwoodIt's been a rough couple of months for Teen Mom Amber Portwood. The troubled 21-year-old checked into a Malibu rehab facility at the beginning of the summer and has been fighting for custody of her 2-year-old daughter, Leah. Right now Amber's ex Gary Shirley is caring for their only child. But things might be turning around for Amber. She checked out of rehab last week and was on the first flight from California to Indiana to see her daughter.

The two spent the whole weekend together, shopping and running errands around Anderson, Indiana. This is a good thing, right?

I don't think it's a question of whether or not Amber loves Leah, it's just a matter of Amber maturing enough to realize that sometimes love means being selfless. Her fights with Gary, her downright disturbing behavior -- all that needs to stop. Rehab was a great place to start for Amber. Hopefully she gained some perspective while there and the tools she needs to be a healthy individual and a caring mother.

This could be the first weekend of the rest of Amber's life, and I only hope for the best for her. It's really hard to watch the show and see her lash out at Gary and, well, just about everybody, because her actions just look like learned behavior. It looks like that's all she was exposed to as a kid, thinks fighting and hitting is OK, and thinks that's what adults do. I hope rehab showed her that's not the case.

There are rumors that Amber is thinking about moving to Tennessee to live with her brother, which would likely mean leaving Leah in Indiana in Gary's custody. I can't say whether or not that's a good thing, but Amber has to do what she needs to do to get out of her toxic Gary situation. I hope Amber thinks about what's best for Leah before making any permanent decisions.

What do you think?
