Lady Gaga’s Jazzy Version of ‘You & I’ Is Better Than the Original (VIDEOS)

lady gagaSo class, as we discussed yesterday, Lady Gaga's making an announcement tonight on MTV at 7:49 p.m. EST. She's going to debut the video for "You and I" (although we've all already seen it thanks to a leak earlier this week), talk about her VMA performance, and take fan questions.

What her big revelation will be remains to be seen, and while I hoped she was going to announce that her next song would be reggae, I think I was way off. Judging from her MTV VMA promos, she ain't doing no reggae. See for yourself.

In the four variations of the short commercial promoting the VMAs, Gaga is at her piano performing a stripped down version of "You and I." And by "stripped down," I mean that she literally takes off her clothes and has stripped the song of its country production and turned it into a soulful jazz rendition. As the writer at Entertainment Weekly deftly pointed out, the song has a Four Non Blondes feel to it that can't be ignored. I though for sure Gaga was going to bust out and sing "what's going on."

So ... Gaga's a jazz star now? I'll allow that. She's dominated pop, rock, and country, so if reggae's not her new thing, I'm fine with jazz. She sounds terrific. You can really hear that she's a singer first and foremost, unlike, say, Britney Spears. Gaga's voice has a seductive tone and professional quality to it that so many pop stars lack. I'd buy a Gaga jazz record, I wouldn't buy a Selena Gomez jazz record.

Still, the announcement is a mystery. The promos have been leaked but her proclamation has been kept a secret. New tour? She's pregnant? She's retiring? She's sleeping with Marc Anthony and has plans to adopt Max and Emme? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

In the meantime, watch her VMA promo spots and enjoy Gaga's jazzy voice:
