Amy Winehouse's Ex-Husband Doesn't Deserve Sympathy

amy winehouseBy now, just about all of Hollywood has reacted publicly to Amy Winehouse's death. But Winehouse's closest circle had been nervously anticipating the reaction of one person in particular: The singer's ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil. Although they divorced in 2009, Fielder-Civil's mom, Georgette, was worried that her son could have a destructive reaction to the news. He's currently serving a 32-month sentence for burglary and firearm possession at Leeds' Armley Jail, and when the news broke, he was quickly put under close surveillance by guards. It seems like that was the best thing to do, given that he is "devastated, shattered," and inconsolable.

He even told his current partner and the mother of his child, Sarah Aspin, who had a private visit with him yesterday, that he will "never ever again feel the love" he felt for Amy. She said Fielder-Civil's in shock over her death and says everyone who knew them knew the "depth" of their love.

It's heart-wrenching to hear what Fielder-Civil is going through, of course, and he deserves to mourn the loss of Amy, who he considered his soul mate. But, at the same time, I don't really have much sympathy for the guy.

Amy's parents, Mitch and Janis, have said in the past that they blame Blake for introducing Amy to hard drugs. It's hard to say if the blame should completely fall on him, but there's no doubt the two had a destructive, co-dependent relationship. It also seems like Blake realizes he's pretty screwed up and didn't know when to say enough is enough. For example, he had a child with another woman, and yet there were rumors that he and Amy were back together post-divorce. Georgette said he would feel like he "should have been there" for Amy during her recent battle with drugs and alcohol, instead of being locked up. But it seems like, if he really knew what was best for his ex-wife, he would have stayed away. As she sang in many of her Back to Black lyrics, the two were just "no good" for one another.

I hope Blake finds a way to cope with this tragic news, and I hope he doesn't try to inflict harm on himself, because of course, that's not the answer. But when it comes to who our hearts should go out to, I'm just not sure it's this man, who likely played a great role in Amy's demise.

Do you feel bad for Blake?
