Lady Gaga & Bette Midler Can BOTH Be Fabulous (VIDEO)

lady gaga mermaid wheelchairBette Midler is a living legend, certainly one of the most influential entertainers of the 20th century. But because it's been quite some time since she was the "wind beneath our wings," Bette's RIPE for a tribute. So, it's no wonder Lady Gaga decided to try her hand at the "mermaid in a wheelchair" act Midler originated back in the early '80s. The Mother Monster appeared on stage in Sydney, Australia in mermaid garb, in a wheelchair, managing to anger both the disabled community and The Divine Miss M. Unfortunately, it seems Bette saw Gaga's performance not as a tribute, but instead, a direct rip-off.

Midler tweeted, "I'm not sure @ladygaga knows that I've performed my mermaid in a wheelchair for millions of people -- and many of them are still alive. I've been doing singing mermaid in a wheelchair since 1980. You can keep the meat dress and the firecracker tits -- mermaid's mine." Whoa, battle of the divas!!!

I'll bet loyalist fans of old school divas (like Midler, Cher, Madonna, etc.) are eager to jump on Team Bette and rage out about how Gaga is nothing more than a rip-off artist. But they'd be missing the point. Gaga is a theatrical star who cheekily, repeatedly nods to artists who've preceded her. Case in point: Many of her videos, particularly "Love Game," "Telephone," "Alejandro," and "Edge of Glory," are chockablock with imagery, dance moves, costumes, etc. that pay homage to Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna, and obviously Quentin Tarantino.

Madonna's cool with it. She "gets it" -- that Gaga deeply respects her, and that the "imitation" is truly the sincerest form of flattery and a straight-up tribute.

After her bitter tweet, it's clear Bette could have stood to take a tip from Madge. Thankfully, it seems like she did, because her follow-up tweet read: "Let's drink this over at the Emmys in September. Fabulous mermaids can coexist!" Awesome. Now that's an over-the-top toast I'd love to witness.

Here's some footage of the Gaga performance ...

Do you agree that Gaga was paying tribute to Bette in her wheelchair act?
