'Judy Moody & the NOT Bummer Summer' Reviews Bum Me Out

Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer SummerSummer movies save moms across the country. They provide a good diversion to fill some of the endless long, unstructured summer days, and there's air conditioning! So anytime a kids' one hits theatres, I get excited ... until the reviews start coming out and bring me down. The recently released Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer is being anything but lauded by critics, and that IS a big bummer.

It's based on the book by Megan McDonald, which is a cute read. If you're not familiar with it, the story revolves around Judy (played by Jordanna Beatty) who doesn't want to have a boring old summer. So she organizes a list of dares for her and  her friends to complete, which leads to all sorts of crazy hijinks. Not Oscar-award winning material, but some fun stuff to work with nonetheless.

I'll take my children regardless of what "they" think, but if you're the kind of person who goes or stays home based on what the critics say, then here's what they say:

After offering up a few positive words for the flick, CinemaBlend.com went negative: "Unfortunately, this impulse to reflect the world through adolescent eyes is never developed into a consistent theme, depriving Judy Moody of any substance."

Do we really need substance when it keeps my kids sitting quietly for 91 whole minutes?

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the main characters have "the requisite supply of hair and spunk", but "... That's the best I can say for this canned piece of family so-called entertainment, which slathers on the bright colors and peppy eccentricity ... but fails to capture the books' childlike voice and charm."

They have popcorn though!

Inside Pulse is beyond harsh:

From the dialogue to the meandering plot, this will be painful for parents not because it’s a children’s film but because it’s a bad one. This is a film desperately trying to be another Diary of a Wimpy Kid and failing miserably at it.

Ouch, but really, who cares? Some of the best mom naps to be had are in those theatre seats. Bring it on!

Will you go see Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer? Do movie reviews affect your decision to go see kids' movies?
