Shirley MacLaine on Open Marriage, Sexcapades & UFOs (Oh My!)

Shirley MacLaineShirley MacLaine made an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show today and had a little bit to say about pretty much everything. She was there to promote her twelfth book I'm Over All That: And Other Confessions, which is as wacky and shocking as we expect from MacLaine.

Among the tidbits she shared with Oprah today: She and her husband of 30 years, Steve Parker, had an open marriage, and she once slept with three men in one day. Oh yes, she did.

I wasn't into sexcapades but I did try it once. I had three people in one day. It was a political campaign where everyone was doing the same thing, so I didn't want to be left out.

The crowd went wild and Oprah looked a little bit frazzled ... or jealous, not sure which. Of her open marriage (which ended in divorce in 1982), MacLaine said:

I had affairs and so did he, but we were very good friends. I loved the freedom and so did he. I've had an awful lot of lovers ... and a lot of awful lovers.

Wow, Hollywood today seems downright prudish in comparison to what was going on in MacLaine's heyday. She did say as a rule, she was into monogamy.

She also gave Oprah a tour of her New Mexico home, which is gorgeous, and showed the balcony from which she watches UFOs. And just when she had me wondering why she gets such a bad rap for being crazy ...

The book covers a host of random topics that she's gotten over, and things she's not. One thing she says she'll never get over: Good lighting.

At night, choose a restaurant with candlelit tables. Even ask for another candle. Claim you can’t see the menu. Never sit where there is an overhead light. It makes you look like Grandma Moses. And never sit where you can feel a cross-light splash across your face. A 2-year-old looks haggard in that condition.

She is over the paparazzi, but says she has no solution "except perhaps murder. But then, even paparazzi can be reincarnated."

As for all the criticism her views have garnered over the years, MacLaine told Oprah she takes it all in stride.

All I ever cared about if they made fun of me was that they were funny. I can't stand a joke that's not funny. Isn't being alive kind of a joke?

She's got something there. I love MacLaine and her exuberant and eccentric outlook on life. While one may not agree with everything she has to say, there's no denying she's an amazing character both on screen and off.

What do you think of Shirley MacLaine's take on life?
