Elizabeth Taylor Would Be Proud to Have Her Funeral Picketed

Elizabeth TaylorAs the world mourns the loss of legendary actress Elizabeth Taylor, the hate-spewing members of Westboro Baptist Church are dusting off their picket signs. They likely haven't had much time to collect any dust because they protest pretty much anyone's funeral who isn't a member of the church, but their beef this time is with Taylor. Her offenses: Adultery and enabling homosexuality

Margie Phelps, daughter of the church's pastor, Fred Phelps, tweeted today: "No RIP Elizabeth Taylor who spent her life in adultery and enabling proud f-gs. They cuss her in hell today. #Westboro will picket funeral!"

If it weren't so horrific, it would almost be humorous, because these church members just have absolutely no idea how hypocritical and how much of a joke they are to the rest of the world -- religious and non-religious alike.

I just imagine them sitting there reading obituaries all day with bated breath to see who they can go condemn next while their Bible stating, "Thou shall not judge" sits nearby.

Let's see, they've already managed to harass (or planned to harass -- their follow-through record isn't so good) mourners at the funerals of dead soldiers; children who died in a fire; the 9-year-old victim in the Arizona shooting, Christina Taylor Green; and Elizabeth Edwards -- just to name a few.

It's one thing to disagree with someone's viewpoint or lifestyle, but another to harass loved ones while they're mourning and grieving deeply. It's beyond hateful, but under the First Amendment, they're allowed to do it.

But really, as despicable as it is, Taylor would be proud that these hate mongers have chosen to picket her funeral. It just shows how much passionate work she did to promote AIDS awareness and research and what a lasting difference she made. Among her many legacies is the American Foundation of AIDS Research (amFAR). In a statement today, the organization said:

Dame Elizabeth's compassion, radiance, and generosity of spirit will be greatly missed by us all. She leaves a monumental legacy that has improved and extended millions of lives and will enrich countless more for generations to come.

And there's nothing Westboro can do or say to change that.

Do you think Elizabeth Taylor would be proud to have Westboro Baptist Church picket her funeral?
