Slainte! A Limerick for Every Occasion

ShamrockHappy St. Patrick's Day! Are you wearing your green, donning a shamrock, and ready to shout Slainte! as you knock back a few (or more) green beers? As you go about the day's festivities, a limerick can be a great way to impress your drinking buddies and add to the celebration. Whether you post one as your Facebook status or recite one from atop a bar stool late in the evening, a list of limericks can come in handy today.

No one actually knows if the Irish get credit for starting the fun little five-line poems -- some think the English may have. But since there is the great Irish city of Limerick and they were traditionally composed by drunks, St. Patrick's Day is the perfect day to honor them. Of course, you can always make up your own, but here's a list of some good ones for inspiration to suit any situation you may encounter today:

Dirty -- These are the best and most plentiful.

There once was a fellow O'Doole
Who found little red spots on his tool
His Doctor a cynic
said Get out of me clinic,
And wipe off that lipstick you fool!

St. Patrick's Day -- The perfect toast for when you're getting toasted

St. Patrick’s comes once every year
And gives us a chance to drink beer
High on porter and stout
We all give a shout
Till next morn when we pay for it dear

Kid-Friendly -- Having your children make up their own can be a fun activity today or any day.

There was a young man from Dealing
Who caught the bus for Ealing
It said on the door
Don't spit on the floor
So he jumped up and spat on the ceiling

Political -- You can guess who this one is about.

He promised us change and we got it

Though not quite the way that we thought it

To his left he owes debt
To his right, deep regret
And our kids will be broke cause we bought it.

Motherhood -- My own contribution.

Motherhood it is driving me crazy
It's not for the weak or the lazy
If they weren't so cute
I'd give them the boot

So for now a little wine saves me.

What are you favorite limericks?
