'Slumdog' Star Rubina Ali Loses All in Fire

Rubina AliIn devastating news out of India, Rubina Ali, who starred in the hit film Slumdog Millionaire, and her family have lost everything in a fire. Their shack was part of a group of thousands of others destroyed in the fire in Mumbai, and the family is now homeless.

Rubina, now 12, told ABC News she even lost the photos she took when she traveled to Hollywood for the Oscars:

We only have a few clothes left, we tried hard to salvage whatever we could before the fire spread. My pictures at the Oscars, all my memories, are all gone.

But as heartbreaking as the news is, the question is: Why is this brilliant little actress still living in a shack?

Danny Boyle, the film's director, had promised to put Rubina and her co-star, Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, up in houses long ago funded by trust funds he set up for them. But while Azharuddin moved into his new home more than a year ago, why is Rubina still living in a shack when she starred in a film that won eight Oscars?

Reports say she's scheduled to move into a new home soon, but why would it possibly take so long? And what are she and her family supposed to do between now and the time they do finally move into this home they've been promised?

'Had we moved in there earlier, we would not have had to see this day,' her father, Rafique, said.

While it seems inexcusable that she'd still be living in such deplorable conditions, I also have to wonder if somehow it's her father that has gotten in the way. From reports of his trying to sell Rubina to demanding more money, it wouldn't be surprising if he has somehow held things up.

Regardless, I certainly hope to see those in Hollywood who made so much money from her good work step in to assist them in their time of need. Best wishes to her and her family.

Do you find it outrageous that Rubina Ali is still living in a shack after starting in an Oscar-winning film?
