The Kardashians Are Mega Millionaires Because We're Stupid

You probably already know that the Kardashians are very different from the average American family. Besides being followed by reality TV cameras 24/7/365, there's also the fact that they have an INSANE amount of money. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter sat down with Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner recently, who spilled that her brood pulled in $65 million in 2010 alone. Stomach turn? Just a bit?

It shouldn't be all that surprising, being that you can't go anywhere without seeing one of their mugs, and every time they make an appearance or tweet, they're being handed cash. Why does Jenner think people are willing to pay up for a piece of the Kardashian action?

We’re just this big family with a lot of drama and a lot of issues, and there’s someone here for everyone to relate to.

While it's sweet that people can somehow identify with the Family K's ridiculous "normal" family problems, the fact that they're raking in the big bucks is still irritating. Here's why ...

People used to be famous for, well, having talent. Making music, acting in films, writing award-winning scripts, being an incredible athlete (as Olympic gold medalist and hands-on manager of the fam, Bruce Jenner, knows). Now, we're lauding this family for nothing more, really, than being famous. Fame for the sake of fame. Sure, Kourtney and Kim have that boutique D-A-S-H (does anyone besides Lindsay Lohan actually shop there?) and a jewelry line and all the girls are drop-dead gorgeous, so they're running around posing for magazines and then crying about it.

Kim claims a lot of their success can be owed to their fans' feedback, specifically online. (A line that seems very similar to what Lady Gaga is constantly saying -- even this morning on GMA -- about being inspired by her "Little Monsters.") The Kardashian with the best-known badonkadonk told The Hollywood Reporter:

People leave comments [on our blog]: What shoes do you wear, and what lip gloss do you use? My mom told us, 'So why not be a brand for our fans and give them what they want?' Many of our ideas [about what to endorse] come from our fans and then our mother makes it happen.

I can't say it isn't brilliant marketing. But why oh why do these people even have fans? I just can't wrap my head around it. If Kim could put out an album that was worth listening to, filled with songs she wrote and could actually sing, fine, I'd get it. If Kourtney actually designed clothing that was sold in the D-A-S-H stores ... if Khloe was famous for something other than, I don't know, marrying a pro athlete?

The Hollywood Reporter story notes that plenty of critics "wonder what, if any, redeeming qualities [the Kardashians] bring." It doesn't matter what critics think, though. Enough people adore the reality fam and are going to eat up anything that comes out of Kardashian, Inc. Maybe that's the answer. Their talent is the ability to read and cater to American consumers' psyche. That's right ... they're fooling us ALL!

Are you a fan of the Kardashians? Do you think they've truly earned that $65 million?
